They Don't Do That No More
Dave Gunning/ Jim Dorie
They walked everywhere they went and sailed on the wind
Wasn't even that long ago some still remember when
You could drink the rivers and eat from every shore
Well the tides come and go they don't do that no more
There were dance halls all around there was one on Green Hill,
Where the good old boys and folks from town and all the women dressed to kill
Many met their sweethearts wrote letters back and forth
Now that's all been changed they don't do that no more
They don't do that no more they don't do that no more
They don't write letters back and forth
They don't do that no more
Every family had a garden somewhere in the yard
Comforting to know you'd always eat if times got hard
And homemade bread was common so was being poor
Now there's credit cards and big box stores they don't do that no more
They don't do that no more they don't do that no more
They spend more than they can afford
They don't do that no more
They used to camp there with their kids they'd play in the water
The Landing had a fishing fleet she was good as any other
They'd swim out to Pine Island boil fresh dug clams on shore
Then the big mill started going they don't do that no more
They don't do that no more they don't do that no more
There's poison on the harbour floor
They don't do that no more
They don't do that no more
They don't do that no more

A Tractor
Dave Gunning
Seems things are getting tougher with every season that comes
And we're not getting any younger and our work is never done
But I just got back from town and I think I made a deal
Bought a tractor with some money and two horses from the field flesh and bone for steel
When I've ploughed the final row, and you're waiting home for me
I'll be coming down the drive with no blisters on my feet
And still have time to check the barn before my supper's cold
Then get showered cleaned and shaved and take you dancing down the road while the crops start to grow
So goodbye horses my old friends
The days gone never come again
Now one man can do the work of ten
With the harvest in early long before the colours fall
We'll watch the autumn sunsets after we've done it all
This thing will push the winter snow clear out of the drive
Haul the timbre for wood stove when it's piled up high right up to the sky
So goodbye horses my old friends
The days gone never come again
Now one man can do the work of ten
Poor old Chester's is retired he's been resting on the hill
I could harness him again but I don't think that I will
Now as long as the rain comes and the sun knows when to shine
And the hay grows tall and the wind blows it dry we'll be doing just fine
So goodbye horses my old friends
The days gone never come again
Now one man can do the work of ten
So goodbye horses my old friends
The days gone never come again
Now one man can do the work of ten
Now one man can do the work of ten

This Changin' Wind
Dave Gunning/ Ray Stewart
How will we know when to stay or when to go
As the poison rises slowly everyday
Don't wanna leave it's gettin' harder now to breathe
And harder to believe a word they say
There's a long train comin'
Gonna get onboard gonna get onboard
It's been a long time comin'
Now it's close behind this changin' wind
Ya it's close behind this changin' wind
I'm not sure with the all things they ignore
How much we can endure before we break
Still not clear if we'll see any change 'round here
With all the steps they boldly dare not to take
There's a long train comin'
Gonna get onboard gonna get onboard
It's been a long time comin'
Now it's close behind this changin' wind
Ya it's close behind this changin' wind
Can't explain why the loss outweighs the gain
Well the answer still remains for us to find
Can only guess how we'll deal with all the rest
As we're cleaning up the mess they've left behind
There's a long train comin'
Gonna get onboard gonna get onboard
It's been a long time comin'
Now it's close behind this changin' wind
Ya it's close behind this changin' wind

Sing It Louder

Sing It Louder
Dave Gunning/ Sally Spring
I am a soldier but I never had a gun
I carry songs upon my shoulders hoping we shall overcome
But on this road I'm not the only one
Who's following the thunder of the drum
I am not rich but I have more than I need
In the middle of this battlefield full of money driven greed
And the line's getting thinner now between right and wrong
You lift your voice I'll beat the drum
Across the valleys and up through these hills there's a feeling all over this land
That if we stand and rise together there is change within our power
I am preaching to the choir to sing it louder
I am preaching to the choir to sing it louder
Let's sing for the living upon the land and in the sea
Let's sing out for justice let's sing what we believe
As the world spins round and round may we one by one
All join hands and beat the drum
Across the valleys and up through these hills there's a feeling all over this land
That if we stand and rise together there is change within our power
I am preaching to the choir to sing it louder
I am preaching to the choir to sing it louder
So raise your voices now we can make this work
Through the eye of the storm we shall be heard
There's an echo in the distance that's played before
More suffering and hardship more cruelty and war
But before we stop and rest we must pass it on
For the young to march and beat the drum
Across the valleys and up through these hills there's a feeling all over this land
As we stand and rise together there is change within our power
I am preaching to the choir to sing it louder
I am preaching to the choir to sing it louder
I am preaching to the choir to sing it louder
I am preaching to the choir to sing it louder

Breaker's Yard

Breaker's Yard
Dave Gunning/ Jamie Robinson
Fresh coat and polished brass a sunlit port side
Dirty boots and shiny shoes for breaking loose
A cradle on a slipway clear a high new moon tide
A soul up on a roof with the perfect view
We danced into night by the ferris-wheel lights
Another toast to the town there was champagne all around
And young hearts fresh in love tears of goodbye
With all hands journey bound then and now
Memories like mercury flow straight back to me
Even though the years are miles apart
She was something yesterday more than a castaway
Heading for the breakers' yard heading for the breakers' yard
Her rails and silver shone like crystals by a flame
As I watch her cut the sea and carry me
But salty wind and passage fare pays a rugged water toll
And wears through the black and white coat by coat
Memories like mercury flow straight back to me
Even though the years are miles apart
She was something yesterday more than a castaway
Heading for the breakers' yard heading for the breakers' yard
Silence from the engine room no captain on the bridge
Hanging wires and rusted bones all there is
I watched her come undone bit by bit everyday
The breaker's yard is empty now haul away
Memories like mercury flow straight back to me
Even though the years are miles apart
She was something yesterday more than a castaway
Heading for the breakers' yard heading for the breakers' yard

A Halo That Fits
Dave Gunning
Reached out far and lost my grip
Tried a few things I won't admit
And nothing changed me
In any good deed I have done
An unlikely hero was overcome
And it sent me drifting
I left free on the run
And got to close to the sun
Landed right here in the ditch
Can't find a halo that fits
Broke this ground ploughed these rows
Another season and nothing grows
I know I let you down
Good intentions solid plans
The days slipped right through my hands
And scattered all around
I tried each one on for size
There were so many that caught my eye
I must have launched a thousand ships
Can't find a halo that fits
Some look at us and think we're broken
Some look at us and think we've got it made
I've flown like the Devil into the sun
Lost my friends one by one
But I haven't lost you
I'm no angel as you know just hung up as this river flows
It's true love with a little twist can't find a halo that fits
Ya just the same as everyone that got too close to the sun
And landed right here in the ditch can't find a halo that fits

I Robbed The Co. Store

I Robbed The Co. Store
Dave Gunning
There were agents there to greet us they led us through the bush
Under evergreens and hardwood trees along the running brook
They brought us to the land that we signed the contracts for
It was nothing but a forest from the hills to the shore
Where were all the clearings where were all the paths
We thought there must be some mistake there was no one there to ask
Knowing only open space back in the Aird south of Beauly
We were afraid of all the darkness and the eyes within the trees
The hills behind us loomed with all the yellows and the reds
The fall it was upon us and the winter close ahead
Our children they were starving I knew what I had to do
I left with Douglas and Mackay like the Devil on the loose
I robbed the Company Store I robbed the Company Store
The Garrison knows me now because I robbed the company store
I robbed the Company Store I robbed the Company Store
The Garrison knows me now because I robbed the company store
We crept up on the soldiers we took away their guns
Tied them to a hardwood tree so they couldn't run
And there inside the storehouse taking only what we'd need
We saluted to the men and left a knife down by their feet
They sent a messenger to Halifax 100 miles away
They called it a rebellion and with justice we should pay
We'd surely be arrested now if only for revenge
With no choice to do things different I would do the same again
I robbed the Company Store I robbed the Company Store
The Garrison knows me now because I robbed the company store
They ordered the Militia to come from Truro town
And the Yankee farmers got between and asked them to stand down
Said we'd only cause them problems if they didn't treat us fair
And everything was considered they decided we were square
I robbed the Company Store I robbed the Company Store
The Garrison knows me now because I robbed the company store
I robbed the Company Store I robbed the Company Store
The Garrison knows me now because I robbed the company store
I robbed the Company Store I robbed the Company Store
The Garrison knows me now because I robbed the company store
The Garrison knows me now because I robbed the company store

From On Higher Ground

From On Higher Ground
Dave Gunning/ Jim Dorie
I waited in the moonlight I'd take 'em one by one
Alone in the silence 'til each bullet left the gun
Knowing when I fired they might not even hear the sound
Cause I was looking down from on higher ground
There's a point where we break a line that can't be crossed
Things that we'll stand for no matter the cost
You think it's me you're hunting but I've turned this around
I can see you clearly now from on higher ground
So I'll be the last man standing when this has gone down
There's an old abandoned mine nearby you never will be found
So come on get me fellas to Hell you'll be bound
I'm am drinking with the angels from on higher ground
My family had no part you chose to make it so
I warned you when it started I wouldn't let it go
You could have gotten out alive to some other restless town
Looks like your time's running out from on higher ground
So forgive me my father for what I have done
There will be no more silence for the man I've become
Forever circling in a moment where my heart always pounds
And no way to make it right now from on higher ground
Forever running with my life now from on higher ground

Love Fell In

Love Fell In
Dave Gunning/ Thom Swift
We were running around hanging on to each other never looking far ahead
Down all the roads together when they seemed longer so young and hell bent
Somewhere back between now and then
That's when love fell in
Just when we were thinking this couldn't be better we were walking on the moon
With nothing but a clear sky we climbed for miles and miles 'til we were running out of room
So we slipped away where the light was dim
That's when love fell in
That's when love fell in
That's when love fell in
It took us by surprise
The winds of the season were changing direction you went yours I went mine
It hit hard and it hit fast with all this leaving but you left but one thing behind
And the stillness grew and had no end
That's when love fell in
That's when love fell in
That's when love fell in
It took us by surprise
And how many times had we walked along that river and never missed a step
Then it happened when we were walking by the deep end
That's when love fell in
That's when love fell in
It took us by surprise
That's when love fell in
That's when love fell in
It took us by surprise
It took us by surprise

Alberta Gold
Dave Gunning/ Matt Andersen
We left for Alberta left the East coast
Followed the clouds running West
That highway was long worn by other fools
Fools like us I guess
I could have worked a job close to home
But never get far ahead
Now we're out here just long enough to pay off debt
But it hasn't happened yet
Alberta gold
It's a story we all know
Alberta gold Alberta gold
Dark black as coal
There's money in the trees cracks in the streets
The Devil's out on the town
He'll buy you drink and fill your cup
We're pulling his blood from the ground
Alberta gold
It's a story we all know
Alberta gold Alberta gold
Dark black as coal
There's no more boats left in the bay
No young cowboys home on the range
We've been going flat out on a three week stint
Working ourselves to the bone
We're going take a break just for a little while
Gonna catch our flights back home
Alberta gold
It's a story we all know
Alberta gold Alberta gold
Dark black as coal
There's no more boats left in the bay
And there's no young cowboys home on the range

Pasadena
Dave Gunning/ Catherine MacLellan
All the way from Pasadena maybe you have seen her she sparkles more than all them city lights
With just place to rest her head in the middle of it all she feels so small she feels so small
Everyone's been in a rush trying to get all they want it's nothing like she thought it would be
Oh but I would dance her slowly all the way down Young street to feel her breathe just to feel her breathe
She's out of reach morning star the city streets only go so far
Something hit me and left a scar I can't feel my heart
It was spinning all around us it felt like circumstance I saw the ghost of morning coming to
Closed my eyes and listened but only heard sounds passing through passing through
She's out of reach morning star the city streets only go so far
Something hit me and left a scar I can't feel my heart
Now the highway has gone and there's no going back everything slipped beneath the wheels
But oh the road to Pasadena it twist and it bends and never ends
She's out of reach morning star the city streets only go so far
Something hit me and left a scar I can't feel my heart
She's out of reach morning star the city streets only go so far
Something hit me and left a scar I can't feel my heart I can't feel my heart
I can't feel my heart

The Red Onion
Dave Gunning/ John Meir
Oh the wooden door is open for the morning pour
With a "come on in get sheltered from the rain"
All ye lads and ye sailors lined along the tracks
Waiting to raise a toast to the train
There were men of fine up bringing will all their lady loves
There were others in their dirty rubber boots
All telling lies and stories crowded at the bar
In the distance the lonely whistle blew
Line up boys have this one on me
For the ladies the first one's always free
Lift your glass against the rain
To the ones gone away
May the steel rails that take them bring them back again
There was surrender to the changes new faces in the town
Some left for the cities and the war
Some thought the world and heaven was this little harbour town
But they'd talk about what used to be before
Line up boys have this one on me
For the ladies the first one's always free
Lift your glass against the rain
To the ones gone away
May the steel rails that take them bring them back again
Post cards in the letter bags came from far away
As the home fires and new world money burned
And for the widows and lonely sailors with hearts that couldn't wait
The Red Onion was reserved for their return
Line up boys have this one on me
For the ladies the first one's always free
Lift your glass against the rain
To the ones gone away
May the steel rails that take bring them back again
Lift your glass against the rain
To the ones gone away
May the steel rails that take bring them back again

To Be With You
Dave Gunning
All I want is to be with you
All day long and all night through
All I want is to be with you
All I want is to be with you
When the morning comes and I awake
I look for you I reach for you
To know you're there me near somewhere
I want to feel your hand in mine
All I want is to be with you
All day long and all night through
All I want is to be with you
All I want is to be with you
Butterflies before my eyes
And clouds of white across the sky
A soft wind blowing through the trees
With your perfect voice you sing to me
All I want is to be with you
All day long and all night too
All I want is to be with you
All I want is to be with you
All I want is to be with you
