My brother and I have been a part of a large movement in our area which has brought awareness to a major pollution issue surrounding an older-style bleached kraft pulp mill. Our region in Pictou County has been proven to have higher than normal amounts of illnesses including cancer, COPD and other chronic conditions that are known to be related to air and water pollution, specifically the substances released by bleached kraft mills. Throughout this journey we've attracted the attention and support of doctors, pulp mill experts, scientists and even Erin Brockovich, who did an interview with Steph Domet on CBC Mainstreet in Halifax. Each time a new person would reach out to us we'd hope that maybe they might finally tell us that we’ve been wrong about everything and there is no cause for concern. We’ve hoped that someone could show us that the government and the regulations were protecting us. We've hoped that the foreign mill owners and government officials really cared about us and our loved ones. But as it turns out, they have been poisoning us and still are as the mill runs without adequate pollution control equipment - all while the government protects the mill and not us. It turns out we are not wrong but we sure wish we were.
